CANNON: is the official and accepted continuity of an original
piece of work that fans use when constructing their fanart, fanfic or fanvid.
CON: (a.k.a. fan convention) is a gathering of fans of a
particular television series, film, literary work or genre. They have discussion panels, meet each other, occasionally have celebrity guests and participate in other activities related to their fandom.
COSPLAY: is when a fan dresses up as character from their
favorite television series, film or literary work. This is usually done at CONs or other fan gatherings.
CROSSOVER: is a when characters from one fandom are combined
with characters from another, either in fanart, fanfic or a fanvid. Although it is rare, sometimes the original creators will create their own crossover between two fandoms. E.g. This would be akin to having the characters from Pride and Prejudice step into the world of Emma, Sense and Sensibility or Harry Potter.
FANDOM: is a community of people (fans) who enjoy a
particular television series, film or literary work.
FANART: is when an artist uses the setting and/or characters
from a particular television series, film or literary work in their artwork. (The website deviantART is an online community were you can find fanart from many different fandoms.)
FANFIC: (a.k.a. Fan Fiction) is a story written by a fan of a
television series, film or literary work, using the characters from the original work without the author’s permission. (The website Fanfiction.net has a large catalogue of fanfics from various fandoms.)
FANGIRLING(OR BOY)v. 1. the reaction a fangirl has to any mention or sighting of the object of her “affection”. These reactions include shortness of breath, fainting, highpitched noises, shaking, fierce head shaking as if in the midst of a seizure, wet panties, endless blog posts, etc.
2. a gathering of two or more fangirls in which they proceed to waste endless amounts of time ogling, discussing/arguing, stalking, etc. the object of their “affection”
AU: (a.k.a. Alternate Universe) is a fanfic which is written
using some elements from canon, but disregarding others. E.g. A modern Pride and Prejudice fanfic which places Darcy/Elizabeth within the 21st century would be considered AU.
ONESHOT: is a short fanfic that is only one chapter and will
not be continued.
PWP: (a.k.a. “Plot, What Plot” or “Porno Without Plot”) is a
FANFIC: where nothing happens but steam and often graphic sexual activity.
FAN STUDIES: is the academic discipline which studies fans,
fan culture and the artifacts (fanart, fanfics, fanvids, cosplay costumes etc.) that the fans create.
FANVID: is a multimedia video created using video clips from
a television series or film, set to a particular song. (YouTube is a great source for finding fanvids.)
FANWAR: (a.k.a. fanfeud) is when members of a particular
fandom disagree on a particular issue. Usually it is over which relationship (ship) is better or whether or not something should be considered canon.
LEMON: is either fanart, a fanfic or a fanvid which is based
solely on depicting sexual activity.
MARY-SUE: is a female character within a particular
television series, film or literary work that is the embodiment of perfection, she has no character flaws, is beautiful, nothing bad happens to her and men want to be with her. She is the wish fulfillment of the author and audience alike who want to be her. The term is most commonly used in regard to characters in writing workshops, fanfic and RPs. E.g. Jane could be considered a Mary-sue character within the world of Pride and Prejudice.
OTP: (a.k.a. One True Pairing) is a fan’s favorite
relationship (ship) within a particular television series, film or literary work. E.g. Darcy/Elizabeth are my OTP within the Pride and Prejudice fandom.
RP: (a.k.a. Role Playing) is when someone assumes the
identity of a character, either of their own creation or from a fandom and they interact with other characters online on posting forums or in a tabletop setting such as D&D (Dungeons and Dragons).
SHIP: is a relationship within a particular television
series, film or literary work; it can either be canon or fan constructed. E.g. Within Pride and Prejudice Darcy/Elizabeth and Bingly/Jane would be considered canon ships, while Col. Fitzwilliam/Georgiana is a popular fan constructed ship.
SHIPPER: are fans who support a particular relationship
within a fandom. E.g. I am a Darcy/Elizabeth shipper, in the Pride and Prejudice fandom.
SLASH: is when fans take two heterosexual characters and make
them homosexual either in their fanart, fanfic or fanvid. E.g. Within Pride and Prejudice the pairing of Darcy/Wickham would be considered slash.
UNIVERSE: is everything that exists within the world the
ANON: This one means, naturally, anonymous.
BNF: Big Name Fan
HEAD-CANON: Canon that is created by a fan.
HATEDOM: The opposite of a fandom
OOC: Out Of Character
NFSW: Not Safe For Work
SQUEE: A noise primarily made by an over-excited fangirl (or Boy), however it has spread rapidly and is now widely spread among the web community.

Rave- A gathering of people at a venue listening to electronic music and looking at crazy lights. Originally these were considered underground concerts.
Raver- Person who attends raves
EDM- Electric Dance Music
PLUR- Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect.
This word sums up the cultures goal of spreading positive vibes and happiness through electric music. This also is the official raver handshake.
BPM- Beats per minute
Festival- Is a large venue with multiple stages and multiple artist
Massive- Is a venue with one stage but with multiple artist
Womp- the sound a deep base makes
Acid House-(not the drug) This music version is very funk based and inspired by psychedelic sounds
Drum and Bass- One of the faster music tempos that relies on a very heavy deep bass, sometimes also called hardstep
DJs- Dirty phonics, Sub Focus
Dubstep- A lighter, womper, wobblier version of drum and bass music

Trance- considered being a mellow melody with lulling bass. This would be equivalent to classical music but in the edm world.

Turnt Up- To rage really hard, almost too hard

Dope- Can be marijuana but also can be another term for cool
Kandi- beaded bracelets that are collected and shared throughout shows
Kandi Kid- a raver who has accepted the rave culture and the goal of plur
Cuff- A very thick kandi bracelet and it usually forms a picture or a word
Flufflies- Furry boots that people wear to rave in
Trippy- A feeling of weirdness
Totem pole- A designated stick for a group of people that they carry around at shows

Bass Face- The stupid look that uncontrollably appears when raging to edm
Face melt- Another term for bass face, but used when one was rolling
